A wire is a single, usually cylindrical, string of metal. A cable is two or more wires running side by side and bonded, twisted or braided together to form a single assembly. Wires and cables are used to bear mechanical loads and to carry electricity and telecommunications signals cross over buildings and campus. The telecommunications cabling infrastructure of these buildings and campus consists of a number of standardized smaller elements (hence called structured) subsystems. Entrance Facilities, Equipment Rooms and Telecommunication Room are three physical subsystems. Then there is Backbone cabling subsystem to connect between the entrance facilities, equipment rooms and telecommunications rooms, and there is Horizontal cabling subsystem to connect telecommunications rooms to individual outlets or work areas on the floor. Finally there is Work-Area Components to network end-user equipment to outlets of the horizontal cabling system.
